Hi Guys. Well...the crossover pipe bursted while I was driving on the freeway today. I procrastinated on getting them replaced, so no one to blame but myself. I just hope the engine is OK.

Long story short...I was driving along the freeway and noticed that my AC suddenly stopped blowing cold air. I started fidgeting with the climate control and then started smelling a faint “coolant” smell. Looked at the cluster and saw the engine overheating light. Then, noticed the temperature gauge on “H”. I pulled to the right shoulder and shut off the rig. Came out and saw coolant all over the engine bay. It all happened so fast! There was, however, still some coolant left in the reservoir tank.

Now that the rig is in the shop and the intake manifold will be off, what else should I have them check / replace? Should I also replace all the hoses preemptively? Change the belts? Check the fan clutch? It’s a 2012 with 93k miles.

TIA.

assuming there is no damage, besides failed crossover pipes, there is actually very little that need to be removed to replace them. any additional precautionary work is not really included in the labor for this repair. none of the items you mention need to be touched.

Thanks, Daytona. Just replaced both crossover pipes. Fortunately, the engine is OK. Like many others, looking forward to keeping this rig as long as possible.

It blows my mind that there has not been a class-action lawsuit about this issue...yet.

I don’t understand why Land Rover can’t make these in 1 solid piece, instead of having them “glued” together. Either way, I love my rig and can’t find anything remotely close to its beauty, comfort, and capability.

The new ones (just came out in the past year or so) I think are one piece. That’s what I put in my truck recently. I say I “think” they are one piece because I could still see a seam, so I couldn’t tell for certain if it was some kind of a glued/welded seam or a casting mark. In any event, the new pipes do not have the flange running along the length of the pipe like the old ones. But, it’s still plastic and I have to assume the ends of the Y section of the pipe will still degrade where it hits the block. I’ve seen reports of failure in the old pipes by splitting at the seam, but it seems like there are just as many reports of the pipes leaking in the valley where the ends going into the block have simply been eaten away. If you look through the jag forums, they refer to it as the dreaded valley pipe.

Do the pipes degrade based on mileage or age?
