I have a 2010 LR4 where I’m starting to see suspension issues. Just some small faults now where in mentions normal height only. To be proactive I’m planning to purchase a rebuild kit from X8R and replace the seals and filter material.

They’re asking if my compressor is Hitachi or AMK. The advice they’ve given is to look and see if it mentions where it was made. I can’t find that made in label by taking off the bottom cover.

Are there any other distinguishing marks that can help me determine which brand it is?

If you take the cover off the compressor the two look very different.( mounting set up) Odds are you have a hitachi compressor but there is a label on the compressor that will say the brand name. Unless it’s been replaced before you will have a hitachi

There weren't many detailed photos of the Hitachi, so I took some pics of my new one. ~$600 delivered from RM European. The AMK looks completely different.

Hitachi CMP0001, equivalent to LR # LR072537 or LR023964, metal mounting bracket with rubber isolators NOT included:

Yup. Best I could tell, there was no significant advantage to the AMK, and the AMK required some re-plumbing (not a big deal, but a nuisance). Sounded like LR switched from Hitachi to AMK due to manufacturing supply constraints during LR4 production? Possibly due to factory shutdown related to a tsunami circa 2012?

My original Hitachi lasted 10 years / 125kmi and the dessicant beads were still 95% intact. I'm tempted to try rebuilding it, since about the only thing that might be wrong is the piston ring may be worn slightly. Bench tests identical to new. But I didn't want to **** several more hours and $100 on a repair kit and possibly have the same problem afterwards...

good to know that the "bad" hitachi compressors can still last 10 years. makes the swap easier, when the time comes. Im currently at 10 years/140k miles, on (i think) the original compressor. no signs of failing, and no indication in the carfax that the EAS has been repaired.

I previously thought that the compressor should always be replaced with a new AMK design due to the Hitachi's limitations.

ill leave this hear for reference if anyone needs it. the TSB/Instructions for compressor replacement which also lists the VIN #'s that got each type of compressor.
