An update on my LR4 I did the oil with the mighty vac and got a chance to look a least one of the chains. Everything in there looked very clean with no brown burn. I tugged on the chain with a tool and it seemed pretty taught. I got all 8 liters out so to this day I’m not sure what that sound was but it has not returned. I’ll chalk it up to cold weather.

You do know that most if not all dealers use a vac system to change the oil. Have they been charging you for drain plugs and washers?

I forgot to reply to this. At JLR Thousand Oaks they would pull the pan bolt. I did have it serviced once at Fresno but I do not know if they pulled it. The other 2 times it’s been changed I’ve done it.

Interesting as the JLR dealers I have been to have a fancy air driven draining system. I guess if they are doing and charging for an inspection they may pull the bolt. Usually it is a functioning crack head one step above lot boy who is doing the lube/oil/filters though...

Hi, The timing chain tensioners and guides that were installed with the vehicle in the factory do go bad and it's a ticking time bomb.

You will start to hear the chain clicking before everything goes.

We do a bunch of timing chain jobs at the shop and all you have to do is upgrade to the new and improved guides and tensioners that have been made.

That always seems to do the job. This goes for all RR engines with the Fords in em.

Just did one this last week on a 2012 RR supercharged.

What shop do you work at in Glendale?

Can anyone recommend a trustworthy repair shop to do the timing chain job in the metropolitan Philadelphia area? I'm willing to drive a couple of hours if necessary.
Thanks

Hey all…I have a 2012 LR4 HSE and I’ve been anxious about the timing chain issue for years. Went to many service centers and each time they diagnosed it as something else. Well…it finally got so bad that I had to take it in out of fear of damaging it further and it’s going to be an $8-10k repair estimate.

my question is this…can anyone provide information on the process, what to avoid? Were you able to get Landrover to fix it since it’s a known issue? Best place to take the vehicle with the best price? Did you sell your LR4? Essentially, what did you do, what did you regret and were you happy with your decision.

This is a huge repair and I’m apprehensive about doing it. Also, I know there is a Class Actiin suit pending with LandRover over this issue, have any of you gone through that process? If you’re interested in knowing more please see the following link:

Thanks and any info you provide will be awesome! Cheers! -Rich

Class action on a vehicle that has not been sold for 8 model years now? Hmmm I guess you can hope. There have been vehicles that have reached very high miles on originals so change that oil often!

Odd that the class action only includes 2012-up when the issue was present on 2010-2011 as well.

A motion for Preliminary Approval of the Class Action Settlement (the court has to approve the settlement terms) was filed on 6/28 and will be heard on 8/2. The proposed settlement looks to be a mix of warranty extension (for those who have not had the problem diagnosed by an authorized Land Rover retailer as of yet) and reimbursement for those who have previously paid for it.

Warranty Extension:

Year Mileage Range Warranty Coverage Percentage
6 50,001 to 70,000 60%
7 70,001 to 85,000 50%
8 85,001 to 100,00 40%

Coverage for Engine Damages as a result of failed chains:

Year Mileage Range Warranty Coverage Percentage
6 50,001 to 70,000 30%
7 70,001 to 85,000 25%
8 85,001 to 100,00 20%

Reimbursement for previous timing chain/tensioner expense:

Year Mileage Range Maximum Reimbursement Percentage
6 50,001 to 70,000 60%
7 70,001 to 85,000 50%
8 85,001 to 100,00 40%

Reimbursement for previous timing engine damage expense:

Year Mileage Range Maximum Reimbursement Percentage
6 50,001 to 70,000 30%
7 70,001 to 85,000 25%
8 85,001 to 100,00 20%

Further, An aggregate monetary cap shall apply to reimbursement of Past Repairs or Replacements performed by an IRF of engines that are damaged as a result of timing chain and/or timing chain tensioner failures. The amount of this cap shall be:
(i) $8,000.00, if the Past Repair or Replacement is performed when the Class Vehicle had been in service for six years or less and had been driven for 70,000 miles or less.
(ii) $6,500.00, if the Past Repair or Replacement is performed when the Class Vehicle had been in service for seven years or less and had been driven for 85,000 miles or less.
(iii) $5,000.00, if the Past Repair or Replacement is performed when the Class Vehicle had been in service for eight years or less and had been driven for 100,000 miles or less.

Well, Since I'm coming up on 8 years pretty soon (built July 2013 with September 2013 US delivery), I better take good care of my LR4.
