Taking my LR4 in for routine service at 150,000 miles. Great vehicle so far! (bought it CPO at 50K miles)

My indy shop is recommending these items, but I don't see them listed in my LR user's manual. Would you recommend any of these, or should I pass?

  • Fuel injection service ($129)
  • Power steering fluid service ($99)
  • Mass Airflow Sensor cleaning ($69)
  • Throttle body cleaning ($49)

Thanks!

If you can turn a wrench even a little bit you can do this for $80.

If not then the power fluid flush sounds reasonable but you can handle the rest.

  • Can of BG44k ($20)
  • drain and refill or flush in your garage. ($50)
  • MAF sensor cleaning ($5 can of MAF cleaner)
  • TB clean ($5 can)

Actually the prices quoted by the indy shop don't seem half bad. @ktm525 is right that you can do it less expensively as DIY but that holds true for anything if you have the time, tools, and knowledge. I'm guessing that the fuel injection service is fuel induction service and might be more involved than a can of additive. Personally I would tackle the last two items on my own and have the shop do the first two, but I also would be fine letting them do it all.

To your main question, if your LR4 is running fine at 150K and you love the vehicle, $350 is one of the best spends you can make to keep it healthy. #IMO

There is no way a shop is pulling injectors for $129. Would be interested in how they would "service" them.

No shop will pull our injectors for $129. I'm pretty sure they're pouring a bottle of injector cleaner into your gas tank. BUT if they're bypassing your fuel pump by pulling the fuel pump fuse, bypassing the fuel source rail, and connect an actual fuel injector cleaning tool, then maybe it's worth it. Something like this,
.

Other things are super easy to do yourself under 1 hour and you can easily save yourself a lot of money.

^this.

i have heard of stories when cleaning the throttle body that the manual movement of the flap can cause problems, and the throttle body could need recalibration.
I did this on my car and had no issue. but...something to keep in mind. if you have an IID tool, it could take care of this for you.

You really need more information about what they are doing. As mentioned by djkaosone, there's a big difference between dumping a can of juice in the fuel tank, vs connecting pro equipment to the fuel rail. $129 sounds more like the former but you won't know until you ask. Ditto for the PS fluid, are they just siphoning the reservoir and refilling? Or disconnecting hoses to actually flush the PS system (doubtful, but possible)? The last two items are almost guaranteed to be squirting cleaner on those parts for 30 seconds.

These are all items shops love, because they are extremely high profit margin. If you are not mechanically inclined and not interested in DIY work, it may be worth it to just pay the piper. Otherwise, do it yourself. FWIW, I prefer Red Line SI-1 for injector cleaner, read the review at this link for more info about it. I'm not convinced the BG products are worth twice the price. One bottle every 30kmi or so is probably plenty if you regularly use Top Tier fuel.
