Both my LR3s do this... or at least a similar action. I always got frustrated with the 2005 that with either of the rear doors or rear hatch open, the air suspension would still adjust, contrasting to how it would not adjust with the front doors open. My understanding is if any door/hatch is open it should freeze the Suspension and not allow it to adjust.

my 2008 operates slightly different, and that it will not adjust with the rear passenger doors open, but it will still adjust with the rear liftgate open. What I believe is happening, is that I park the car and turn it off and get out, the vehicle senses the shift of no longer having 250 pounds of load, And as soon as I shut the drivers door the system begins to compensate and adjust. That adjustment just happens to be at the same time I am now standing underneath the open hatch in the rear. It’s only on the rare occasion I’m parked on a surface that is significantly enough off-level and I make it under the open hatch quickly enough that it becomes an issue when I’m standing under it. I honestly used to think it was the movement of the hatch and the change in disbursement of weight on the vehicle that caused it to adjust… But I really think now that it’s just a coincidence that the hatch is open, when the system adjusts from me getting out and parking.

I’ve never looked into why the suspension is still adjusting with a hatch or door open, and it’s honestly not been a big enough issue for me to spend any time on it. But if anyone’s reading this and knows a quick fix, please share and I’ll add it to the list of “one day” items.

My 2013 doesn't "do this" as described in the opening post. But what is clear that it does do is compensate for the removal of load when passengers or cargo are removed. Once our >150lbs worth of dogs are off the cargo area the tailgate height drops. This doesn't happen if, for example, I drove somewhere alone and upon getting home open the gate to unload some bulky but light cargo.

Also in the minority… I have a 2013 HSE LUX and the rear height has dropped maybe three (3) times since I bought it last year. It is not consistent enough to where I have actually tracked it.

The first time it did it freaked me out as I wasn't expecting it. I just thought it was an LR4 anomaly.
