Just brought my LR4 home tonight, and this is my first Land Rover! It only came with one fob, so my first order of business is getting a spare.

Whats the process for programming a second key/fob?

Is it something we can do on our own or is it a dealer only thing?

You can DIY with a programming tool (gap iid or similar) - it’s pretty straightforward as long as you have at least 1 key.

The dealer can do it for $500 + $250 for the key if you prefer.

I prefer to do as much as possible without going to a dealer.

Buy the GAP IID Tool. Depending on what quality you want, you have two options.

Buy an OEM fob, or buy one off of eBay. Then get the key cut yourself and program it yourself with the tool.

The tool isn't exactly cheap, but it is totally worth it. I use it all the time, and have used it to enable DRLs, troubleshoot a freak CEL, enable the digital speedometer, deflate the air suspension for replacing some parts, and a few other things.

as F1 racer mentioned...get the GAP IID tool

$500+ $30 key fob (amazon) is cheaper than the $700-800 the dealer will charge you for fob and programming.
and then....you get the benefit of owning the IID tool. youll now save hand over fist for future maintenance and problems

I recently programmed a couple of keys with the IID tool (super easy and only like $35 each of ebay) I am having trouble getting the key blanks cut though. Where are you guys getting these cut? I went to two large locksmith stores by me, first one said they could do it, after 3 trips there and excuses they said they couldn't cut it. Went to another store and they told me no guarantee it will cut correctly and if it doesn't I'm out $60. called to Land Rover dealers and they can't do it either.

I bought the Land Rover software for the scanner I am currently using, haven't plugged it in to the Rover yet, but for my BMW it had tons of options.

Land Rovers are finicky about what code readers work with it. A lot won't read suspension faults.

You'll probably think we all have a stake in the company, but the IID Tool is universally regarded as the best, given the complete fault-reading and the additional things it will allow you to do.

I got a quick second to plug my scanner in and this is what I got, guess I won’t know if it will program a key until I have the key in hand, I’ve seen the option before, doesn’t mean much until you try it. Seems to
be a laundry list of other functions as well. Sometimes it’s like putting together a Chinese made piece of furniture, instructions are there, but you need common sense to figure them out.... lol
