I'm stuck between wanting to get a Defender - the real one and just continue to make more offroad my 2012 LR4. It's got 90k on it, has been excellent reliability-wise. Has 18" wheels and a nice RTT. I realize the LR4 Is Not the icon, but it does pretty good. A winch, get the wheel in the back, maybe a better bumper...?

If it’s also a daily driver then cruise control, heated seats, power mirrors, and modern antilock brakes with traction control are all nice.

If it’s an off-road toy then I suppose you’ll need something to pull the trailer and the LR4 would be a good fit!

Buy ‘em both.

I'll prob be selling my 97NAS later this year. CA truck with ZERO rust. 121K on truck, 5K on AB Long block that I pulled apart sent to machine shop to have everything mic'd as well as the heads ported/flowed, crower cam, lifters, ARP Headbolts and ARP main bolts, full NRP exhaust (new), and most of the engine parts powder coated, as well as ceramic coated exhaust manifolds. This was going to be a life-long keeper and I wanted the engine perfect, but I've decided to change directions (track my E46M3, and rebuild engine, trans, susp on 930) so I need to let it go when I get it back on the road.

Sometimes I wish I had a lot more walking around money

Yes, the LR4 does seem to do so much. A winch and better rear bumper would go a long way to what I need it for. Love the idea of the Defender but I still like to take long trips and comfort becomes a little more important on the aging spine...

The old Defender is an appreciating asset. Then again, take the money difference between the LR4 and a good-condition old Defender, put it in the stock market, and you'll probably make more than any vehicle would appreciate (unless you lucked out and bought a Ferrari GT 250 back when they were "cheap").

I think the Old Defender also lives in a class of its own. You could drive it on safari, come home, wash up, then drive it to the opera.

But it depends on what you need this vehicle to do, how long you've got to get places, etc.

Admittingly after driving 110's, Wolfs & D3's for many years due to my job I'm fully aware of the defenders capabilities.

Which IMO gave me some experience to decide what to purchase as a private owner/driver & my main aim was achieving the following three objectives:

I, A decent off roader/overlander
2, A capable pragmatic size van rear.
3, Ability to drive long distances in comfort as well as touring to & from premium hotels as & when.

I spent hours researching with dilemma of my final choice, and I firmly believe choosing the D4 over a defender was the correct one, although I would love to afford an old defender.

Excuse the waffle...
