Was thinking the same thing. Saw the Front Runner Aux fuel tank that goes where the spare is. My tires are too big for that space to be used for a spare. Was debating using for water or fuel but definitely wanted to one of the two. If you removed the heat shield maybe it could heat up the water a bit? I like that it is low and under the car for weight distribution. Stopping so often on road trips might lean me to the fuel option though...

Yes, I'm aware of the Front Runner tank and I'm debating it too. But even with it, the space under the cargo area floor would still remain free, hence it doesn't stop me from musing about how to use it... There is another consideration as well. Myself, I don't use tyres bigger than the 265/65/18 KO2s, so - for the time being, at least - I still keep the spare in the original place. With a custom-made water tank, I'd hope to have a hole in the middle of it (a little like the two holes in the IronMan tank) that would be aligned with the hole in my Front Runner drawers. That hole permits me to reach the spare even through the drawer set.

G’Day All - hot, dusty Aussie here

Not 100% finished yet but I have mounted 2 x 40L tanks in the rear of my D4 after removing the back seats - whole system bolts into the existing seat mountings and it only raised the floor level by about 100mm. Real low close to centre of gravity.

@HarryO, very interesting! Where is the pump? And do you fill the tanks using one of the three taps?

Hi Navigare

Yes the two vertical taps on the left are to isolate each tank. The three other taps are fill, vent and water out, under pressure, from the Shurflo 4009 pump which is mounted on the right behind the switches which gives more than enough pressure to shower.

Without contaminating the tank water - using the tap combinations I can draw water from either of the tanks or from an external source (jerrycan, river, etc) for showering, camping, etc.

Thanks @HaryyO, this is immenely interesting! If you have more pictures, drawings, anything - please post here or send to my priv. I'm not much of a technician myself, but I'll show them to my local offroad garage and I'm sure they could replicate it then. Would you provide a rough budget for your solution? I'm sure I'll pay more to get it done than you doing it yourself, but just to have an idea... I'm actually planning to visit Australia one day, too - and, hopefully, all other continents - so the question of water is absolutely essential. I understand that you've gone 1 cm above the normall cargo floor level, but haven't gone below it, right? So I could still one day install Front Runner's extra fuel tank in lieu of the spare? Or perhaps you've done both? I'm just trying to think a step ahead - whether any installations for the extra fuel tank would collide with those for the water tanks...

the Shurflo 4009 pump
Oh, and one more question. Is the pump able to suck out the last drops of water when on a flat surface? Or does it only work until you have, say, 1 cm of water in the given tank? Or do you then park on an incline?

It’s not cheap but given that I built it bloody 500 times you should be able to do it a lot cheaper.

I’m not the plan it in advance guy so just measured & cut as I went (hence the many rebuilds & wastage). I will make a sketch though which should be enough for your guy to give you a price.

it’s about 100mm (10cm) above the original floor level.

The pump will never suck all the water out - will get more if you park on an incline. When not in use I put 1L of Miltons (baby bottle steriliser). Before using again next time I just flush it out a couple of times - not had a problem so far.
