Hi again,

My 2016 LR4 only came with one key fob. I think I know how to get a couple of keyless fobs, but I'd also like to have more than just one of the hard keys for entry in an emergency. That key shape is pretty unusual, though. Has anyone had luck with locksmiths being able to cut one based on the old key?

I don’t know, but plan to look into this myself. I like to keep one hidden on the outside of the truck. Twice I’ve locked myself out in the mountains - first time I had to break a window, second time I had the spare hidden.

The LR4 has this feature that allows you to open and close the rear hatch without unlocking the doors. When I get back to the car after fishing with my key in my fishing bag, I pop the hatch, throw in the bag, close the hatch, and find myself locked out of the car.

I knew about the rear hatch access w/o unlocking the other doors, but didn’t realize it was possible to lock the keys inside. I wonder why they don’t make it work the same as with the other doors. If you try to lock up with the fob inside you get that little squawky error honk to let you know.

It’s always something with these vehicles, LOL.

So from a little more investigation, I may be out of luck on even getting the fob cloned. The local locksmith I spoke with said they can't do anything with a fob for a vehicle newer than 2014. Is that right? Mine is a 2016...anyone have any luck with a source for keys other than the dealership?

I haven’t done it myself, but I know I’ve seen people report on these forums that you can buy aftermarket keyfobs (or maybe even OEM keyfobs) and reprogram them with certain tools/software like the GAP tool. The local locksmith probably doesn’t have software specific to a landrover. I’d recommend getting the GAP tool anyway.

Then, of course, you could get a new one from a dealership as long as you have one good working key, but it costs a small fortune.

Yeah, the GAP tool is on my list. If it can reprogram a fob like this one, it'll pay for itself.

The "sidewinder key," though...looks like not many places have the ability to cut that. Looks like maybe you have to order that from a dealer. The interwebs make it sound like it has to be laser cut, but I'm looking at my existing one and I can see machine marks from the tooling. Some little CNC with a tiny dremel-sized cutter did that work, I bet. And it's aluminum, I think.

Not sure on the sidewinder, but seems like a lot of cars use this type of cut on the hard key. And they sell the blanks for the LR4 emergency key online at a number of places, so I would think places have the ability to cut them. But maybe not.

Found this video regarding reprogramming of the keyfob. Not sure if it applies to your model vehicle:

I just successfully programed a new fob for my 2016 LR4 Landmark using the GAP IID tool. I tried purchasing a 'knock-off' fob off Amazon for $60 that was 'advertised' as programmable for my truck. It looked just like OEM, felt like OEM and seemed quality, but it would NOT program...tried several times. The tech at GAP said "it's the fob". I then purchased this OEM fob off ebay for $100: https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-OEM-LA...T-SMART-KEY-PROXIMITY-REMOTE-FOB/143133481355. It programed first try perfectly...all functions working. It also included a un-cut blank for the back-up key where the knock-off version did not. I haven't attempted to have that key cut by a locksmith yet. When you consider what the dealers charge for an OEM fob plus their charges for programming it (which seems to vary), you are correct- the GAP tool darn near pays for itself, and you want one anyway..right?
