Spare tire mount accessories

Hey all, just placed an order for the Voyager spare tire swing. I just have crossbars and no roof rack so trying to figure out the easiest way to store a rotopax/jerry can and my hi-lift.

I've been looking but mostly all mounting solutions seem to be on the roof racks.

Are there any solutions to mount rotopax and/or hi-lift to the rear tire swing?

I'd strongly recommend considering the Terrafirma spare tire swing arm. I have the Voyager swing and it's not well designed or well made. Some examples of issues I've had:

• The instructions include JPG files for the mounting templates, with no indication of scale which make them largely useless.
• The swing arm is powder coated with no anti corrosion treatment on the underlying metal. Any chip in the powder coat will cause the arm to very easily rust (and continue rusting under the powder coat). See the other thread about Voyager for other examples of people having major problems with this.
• The gas strut is underpowered to hold the weight of a 31"+ tyre. The strut also has no bearings or swivels for attaching to the arm. Instead, they just have it rotate on a bolt thread - very rough.
• On mine, the three major studs used to mount the wheel weren't even welded perpendicular to the mounting face. This caused damage to my Compomotive wheels when I bolted them up. Voyager's response was to "hit the studs with a large hammer or block of wood".
• Due to the way the wheel mounting face is welded to the main arm, you cannot make use of a bunch of standard spare wheel accessories available to the Jeep market, such as Rotopax mounts or bike carriers.

If I had my time over again, there's no way I'd buy the swing arm. It's backyard engineering at best.

For a Jerry can you could use a universal spare tire mount Jerry can tray. A quick internet search found a few options. Do you REALLY need a hi-lift? Unless you’ve got steel bumpers and/or sliders you’ve got nowhere to lift the vehicle.

I just installed the Terrafirma swing arm and am using x2 Universal 6 Gallon "Spare" Tanks from trailedonline.com that sit where the spare used to be. The image below shows x3 mounted but I like x2 (12 Gallons)...x3 seams too heavy. I know its not mounted to the wheel but it gets the job done. I also like that the weight is lower down and not siting on a wheel carrier. I mount my Tembo tusk skottle on the wheel with two ratchet straps.

This unfortunately will not work on the Voyager tyre carrier, as the mounting face for the tyre is not flat.

I’ve never seen one with the tire off, how is it not flat? I’m sure it could be made flat with a cutting wheel and grinder.

It could be fixed with a cutting wheel and grinder, and then some additional welding. You'd also need to repaint it, but given the poor powder coating that Voyager uses, you should probably do that anyway

Thanks for the advice, unfortunately, I actually did order the Voyager rack. However, I called in to place an order before my trip and was guaranteed by the owner that they had it in stock and I would receive it within 3 weeks' time (before my trip). 3 weeks later and after calling and emailing them back to back I got a response saying they don't have all the parts for it. Since they didn't ship I asked for a refund and to cancel the order. That's when the owner started to completely ghost me and ignore all my calls/texts/emails. I had placed an order for the spare tire rack, winch mount, and skid plate. Worried about my $2000 I finally made a claim for fraud on my credit card. Still no reply from Voyager.

Fortunately, once I got back I placed an order on the Terrafirma through AtlanticBritish, called and spoke with Nathan, and he had me the spare tire swing in 2 days. Got it installed yesterday and love the build quality. The price with shipping was cheaper than the Voyager as well if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks for the info! I have a hilfit from my old Tacoma so still carrying it around with the hilfit winch kit...it's not necessary but I have it and I have accessories for it so wish to just have it with me rather than in the apartment. I like this for the jerry can though, also like the option GibboUSA posted (however it's more expensive).

Thanks, I really like this, it is a bit more pricey but it's concealed and out of the way which I like. Going to have to take a look into it.

Glad you dodged a bullet! I've found Voyager's customer service to be spotty at best. They're friendly on initial conversation, but then just seem to disappear. I was trying to address the rusted and seized pivot on my swing arm and at first they were very helpful, but never actually got around to doing anything. Each time I sent a follow up email they took longer and longer to respond, and eventually I gave up.

Yeah, this isn't reflecting well on them if it seems to be common behavior. I assume people like me would like to have some piece of my mind when ordering parts so expensive. Replying honestly would be the least they could do.

Unfortunately for them it's lost business. I'm looking at roof racks next and Voyager rack was my first choice, now considering the Gobi rack instead.
