That's about $794 U.S.

Did they just change the pump, or did they do anything else too? Seems about right if they are charging $200 US per hour, times 2 hours.

Check the front crossover pipes under the intake manifold. They're prone to failure, so much so that many consider them a wear item. If you lift up the manifold and see coolant in the valley, don't drive until you've changed them. There's a ton of threads on it here.

What is best practice for checking coolant level; both when the engine is hot and cold?

Just another thing to add to the "mystique" of our Land Rovers (and I use the term charitably).

AFAIK you just want to have the truck on a level surface, and check it cold. Pretty sure the reservoir only has a marked level range for cold? Dunno if there is any valid "hot" test. (??)

Thanks. In that case I'm good...or at least as good as any Landy owner can be at a given point in time. My overnight cold level was exactly in line with the lower line in the cold fill range.

You fool. You just taunted the rover gods.

For penance, please pay a crossover pipe and a weeping waterpump.

Cylinder head gasket leak or cracked head, for example. Look for white smoke out of exhaust when you first start up.

Not a good indicator as during a cold start in winter or summer, these trucks expel a lot of white smoke for the first 5-10 seconds. A vehicle burning coolant will have white smoking puffing after the cold start during idle.

That’s alarming! Why? What is burning that is producing white smoke?

Coolant smoke is kind of unique; sweet-smelling and tends to linger awhile.
