I can find plenty online at maybe 70k miles for about $40k+ but I located Landmark with all options (HD included) but...100k miles.

I don't need to purchase anytime soon I just want to get back into one.

I’m in the same boat. Wanting to buy an LR4 but I’m very new to the LR world, always loved the asterisk and capabilities I have just heard some terrifying horror stories about them. Is there any way anyone could give some pointers as to what to look for that would be a ticking time bomb when buying a used LR4?

Whether you buy at 100k or 70k or even 40k miles at this point, history and prior maintenance is key. Look for one with a lot of records of maintenance.

I'd have no problem buying one at 100k plus miles. Heck, mine has 110k miles and I'd certainly buy it right now.

I just bought one. 2016, 60k miles, HD package, Vision Assist, and a factory front skid! Pretty much every option but the LUX seats, $35k. I feel like I did my research and hope I found a good one, but only time will tell. It’s single owner with a good history of service at the JLR dealer it was originally purchased from, in fact it just had its 60k major service three months back. I called the dealer to ensure that there wasn’t any denied service. Fuel pump has been replaced as well as the water pump. The dealer couldn’t confirm whether or not they addressed the crossover pipes at the time so I’ll have to watch those.

I’m new to Land Rover and I don’t have a ton of experience working on cars, so I bought an extended warranty through a 3rd party. It was $3,100 American First Auto Protect, and will get me through the next 51 months or another 60k miles with zero deductible. These terms were their year end special. More standard is a few hundred more, $100 deductible and 48 months. I grilled them pretty good on what is covered and I couldn’t find any reason to believe that they’d leave me high and dry, but I won’t know until I need to use it, which I assume I will at some point. He told me that lower control arms are covered so I know I’ll get a good chunk back when those need new bushings. But we’ll see. I’m sure I’ll be handy with a Handy with a mityvac soon, as well as becoming proficient in swapping brakes.

For me there really just wasn’t anything on the market that can provide the comfort for 7 and the capability of the LR4. We test drove the Disco 5, the TD6 mugs were very tempting, and they are extremely capable, but it lost the command position seating, and the 3rd row just didn’t make you smile. Have you sat in the 3rd row of an LR4? There really isn’t anything like it in the industry. Also, seats that fold flat into a platform! Honestly, it’s hard to miss solid axles when you gain that much versatility.

As you can tell, I’m in love. Hopefully she doesn’t abandon me for too many nights in the shop. Don’t be tempted for anything that even sniffs or sketch, and good luck!

120k with oil changes every 7500 miles and lots of service history > 75k miles and 15k oil changes and no service history.

I bought my truck with under 50k on it, so there really wasn't much history on it. Once you get closer to 70-75k those neglected trucks start to gather up issues. I have almost 61k on it now and have done the fuel pump cover, some EVAP stuff, and front LCAs are knocking so those are next.

You can try to confirm regular oil changes and look at the carfax/autocheck for anything alarming(evidence of overheating, coolant burst, sunroof drain problems - which tend to wet out the electronics) - better than nothing, but I don’t think carfax/autocheck are good for much other than accidents. If you happen to have a car that was dealer serviced, you’ll at least have that much info. But I think the best thing is (1) look at the overall condition of the car - if people don’t take good car of the car generally, it will show; (2) a nice long test drive - make sure it gets hot, get on the throttle a bit, get on the brakes, hit some bumps, listen for weird noises and sniff the engine compartment for strange smells (coolant); and (3) have a mechanic check it out. In the end, though, it’s a leap of faith.

The best thing about an unmaintained Land Rover is that they show it. You'll know the difference very quickly between one that's been taken care of and one that's been neglected.

Wait for Russia to invade Ukraine and maybe the price will go down.

Bought my LR4 two months ago >118k. Great service records and a PPI before purchase that identified all I need fixed in the near term. No regrets.
