+1 on parts quote; labor feels right too. You have to take a lot of stuff off to get to the chains. I put in new belts, idler pulleys, water pump, thermostat, coolant hoses I could get to. My ‘09 sport is a different engine, Atlantic British has a youtube for a ‘12 RR Sport if you are curious.

I’m at 132k, I don’t hear chains rattling. i Always let the car warm up before I push it but if I see an open on ramp then I’m going for it. Maybe I’ve just been lucky.

I just bought a 2013 L320 and had her shipped from AZ to a mechanic in PA, en route to me in RI. She rolled off this line in Jan. 2013 and my LemonSquad inspection confirmed the timing chain issue in L320s and LR4s.

The following video is worth a look, as it cuts the cost of this repair (timing chain guides and tensioners).

This guy is a genius... and he's performing this repair for me for $2K - all in... again - worth a look.

Good hack to save time but I assume the chains can't be replaced this way?

I didn’t watch the video but yes, there’s a shortcut to just do the tensioners and guides.

It’s certainly a short-cut, but looks like there’s enough slack in those chains to get the timing off a tooth if not extremely careful. And, if the car already skipped timing before you got it, this won’t fix it as you can’t re-time the engine this way. And, no - I don’t think the chains can be replaced this way.

The other thing I’d be worried about is a valve cover/timing cover leak after doing this because I think you need to pry the valve cover up some to get the timing cover off. Not sure it will seal again when you put it back together with that same old valve cover gasket.
