We recently brought out 2016 LR4 to the dealership to replace the outlet fuel tank flange as recommended on the recent recall. Two weeks later the car wouldn’t start after filling it up. We had the car towed to our mechanic. The fuel pump was reading low pressure and the pump was actually dislodged and lying at the bottom of the tank. Our mechanic replaced the fuel pump and it works now. Has this happened to anyone else? Is the flange and the pump totally unrelated? How can the fuel pump become come loose? Our LR4 has 59800 miles.

Interesting on the dealer invoice it said fuel pump N/C leading us to believe they replaced the fuel pump Along with the flange and gaskets. But the dealer said this was just a part number.

thanks

Rob

My understanding was that the fuel pump/sender unit/flange was a single part. I was wondering if LR was replacing the entire unit, or if they had somehow devised a way to replace only part of it. In any event, the pump is right there with the flange - they both come out the same hole in the tank. Has to be related to the warranty work. Did your mechanic happen to show you the part that was laying loose in the bottom of the tank?

In contrast to jlglr4's experience, the mechanic who did my recall work assured me that the flange unit atop the tank is only the filter assembly and does not include the low-pressure pump. So I guess we have competing data points. I didn't ask whether it also included the sender, but the photos I've seen don't indicate an assembly long enough to reach the bottom of the tank, which I'd expect from a sender.

I am definitely not taking my LR4 in for thay recall. Everything is working as it should. They might work on it at the dealership and put further excessive wear and tear on aged lines, screws, wires and such. That’s more headache than its worth. If it aint broke…..

I don’t really have a data point, just that I had looked for a fuel pump part number one time and the whole thing seemed to be a single unit with the filter, sender, flange, etc. And that seemed to comport with what I saw in the manual. But I never actually ordered it or did any further investigation. From what I’ve read on the forum, the dealers don’t seem to know what the parts are they’re replacing - at least I haven’t seen any good description of the part numbers on the invoices.

I took mine to Jaguar Land Rover San Francisco last week and ended up with problems as well after they completed the recall:

  1. The smell of fuel is incredibly strong when the car is and running. I thought initially some fuel may have spilled during the recall service but it has persisted.
  2. The "Check Fuel Cap Lid" warning has been displaying persistently. Even after I remove/retighten and restart the car the light comes back on. I also got a CEL once.
  3. The fuel level also is messed up. After service, the gauge read all the way empty (<20 miles distance remaining). I filled it up but it wouldn't take more than 16 gallons (of 22 gallon tank). Now I've driven for 30 miles and it's already reading less 3/4 of a tank.
I checked my Gap tool and got these PCM-Engine Petrol faults:
  • P2169-13 (2F) Exhaust pressure regulator vent solenoid control - circuit open - General electrical failure - circuit open
    ( on 30-06-2022 10:00:14 at 126254 km )
  • U0447-00 (28) Invalid data received from gateway A
    ( on 30-06-2022 09:59:50 at 126254 km )

I am trying to get back in touch with the dealership to have them fix these issues that must have been caused by the recall service. Given what we're seeing, I'd tend to agree with jlach993 - if I ain't broke...

To perform the recall, the fuel pump is not touched at all.
The recall is to replace the fuel filter cap.
A new cap is installed and a separate filter installed within the fuel tank.

Not having the recall done is risky. The OEM part will leak and in some cases, the fuel line will become dislodged. Spraying fuel everywhere.

I had the same issue with my truck at JLR San Jose. Some debris “fell in” to where the fuel flange reattaches, preventing it from sealing and it stunk up our garage terribly. Took it back, they dropped the tank (again), found the debris, removed it, and resealed the whole thing. Problem fixed. I wonder if you have the same issue. I’m unclear on exactly where the debris was but it basically smelt like a massive fuel leak right at the filler cap. Tell them to call Sergio at Land Rover San Jose in the service dept. He can tell your mechanic what my issue was. They’re doing a TON of these fuel flange recalls and finding issues with some of them. More info in this other thread. https://www.landroverworld.org/threads/new-recall-alert-fuel-system.43336/page-18

Good to know, I'll be taking mine into LR SJ for the same thing. I need to give them the documentation for reimbursement for the repair I had done earlier and get the updated part installed.
