I would replace it. I’m planning on doing mine as soon as the new flanges are available under the recall.

Alright so problem solved it seems…

I dropped the tank and immediately noticed the sort of caked dirt around the dust cover and ring. It certainly looked as if fuel had made its way out and dried, as I suspected when i saw it with the boroscope.

I cleaned the area thoroughly with a brush and compressed air then removed the ring and lifted the dust cover and noticed the gasket had some caked on mess. This, i believe, would have been caused by fuel meeting dirt. Had the gasket been working properly, the dirt and the fuel would never have made contact.

This all sort of corroborates the the theory the seal between the dust cover and tank wasn’t good.

I cleaned the surface of the dust cover and the tank where the gasket seats, and placed the dust cover back on using a new OE LR gasket.

Once the tank was back in, I started the truck, cleared the trouble code, and it didn’t return (it was returning right away for the last few weeks).

Let it run for about 20 mins, seems to be running a tiny bit smoother and idling a tiny bit higher.

Fingers crossed that is that.

I didn’t replace the fuel pump. I ordered one but after two days it hadn’t shipped despite me paying $40 for next day delivery. I took it as a sign.

Few tools I purchased to make this job a lot easier… a gas tank lock ring wrench. I bought the $16 universal one on Amazon. I wasn’t going to pay $80+ for a one-time-use tool from one of the LR specific sites. As much as I despise Amazon and want to support independent businesses, i have my limits and the price of that tool is pointlessly dumb. I also purchased a transmission jack to lower and raise the tank.

Now I just need to fix the leak I just noticed from the rear crossover pipe.

Like they say… One Life. Live it… in the garage looking for strange leaks and weird sounds.

Few pics of the gasket mentioned and the new gasket:

Just wanted to update this thread for posterity.

About 200 miles after this, the CEL came back on and the same P0089-64 was being thrown. For the next 500 miles or so the light would come and go. I would usually clear it or ignore it as there was no indication there was anything wrong.

Because I’m a super lucky dude (sarcasm), while I was having the truck SMOG’d (California) the CEL came on, during the inspection. Obviously I didn’t pass, now I had to sort this out, even if it was just a faulty sensor or something that doesn’t impact the drivability of the vehicle.

I dropped the gas tank (again) and replaced the fuel pump.

Passed SMOG this morning. No CEL. And the truck is idling a tiny bit higher (this is a fact) and a bit smoother (this might be placebo).

This means I was able to put thousands of miles on a fuel pump that was having issues without even realizing there was a problem. Honestly, if it weren’t for the truck idling a little higher (about 40 rpms) I’d have been convinced I replaced a perfectly good fuel pump to shut off the CEL.

I have a 2015 delivered Dec of 2014. Had the P0089 code two different times. The first time under warranty. It took the dealer several weeks to to correct. Replaced the both sensors and finally got it fixed. The second time it happened it was out of warranty so had an indy shop replace the sensors. This was just before the TSB came out.
I think it was caused because I would overfill to the next gallon when filling up after the initial pump shutoff. I stopped doing it and haven't had the fault for over three years. It never ran rough just had the fault code.
When they dropped the tank to do the recall for the fuel tank flange it took them three times to get it right. The oring on the flange had rust underneath it and when I filled it up you could see a puddle of gas under the truck when parked on a slight incline. It has been ok after replacing the oring the third time.
Best of luck. Hope you get it sorted out. They are fantastic vehicles. Just need tlc.
