Pulling in the driveway; we heard a noise and the LR4 was showing Park but still rolling in “R”.

Got the LR in Park but now it doesn’t seem to want to Engage in R orD. It makes sounds like it’s trying to engage without auccess.

No codes are being thrown….

Plan to tow but wanted to see if anyone has this experience?

What year? I'm assuming pre 2014?

There's a physical cable that connects the shifter to the transmission, and I believe they can corrode/rust and break.

These videos show the replacement process if this is your problem.

In my case, if i shift the lever in D; the transmission makes what i can only describe as a thrusting sound without engaging.

Does anyone know - IF the Gear Shift Linkage is locked up; will the transmission still make noises when R or D is selected?

In checking the LR this morning- It acts like it’s trying to switch gears but it’s not happening. Also doesn’t seem like it’s engaging N from Park Either.

Unfortunately- no LR Code Reader. There is no CEL, but understand that there could be a transmission code.

Yesterday after hitting the linkage with WD40 and playing with steering wheel alignment - I could get R and D to engage. But it seemed like it was slipping and if i had the steering wheel turned too far - no dice.

So it seems like it’s either the Linkage or could be differential?

Update. Replaced the linkage today. The old one if not failed was close. the Entire bearing was rusted and locked up. Unfortunately- This has not improved my issue.

I can get low speed drive to engage on a straight line, any turn of the wheel stops it. Unfortunately- This would seem to be a 1/2 shaft or output shaft failure. It gets towed next Tuesday to a reputable local tranny shop.
