Battery Change - Dealer/Indy versus big box store - Reset computer?

Hi

7 years in and I think I need a new battery.

I was thinking of just using Costco/Autozone etc, versus the dealer....but do the big box stores have the ability to reset my computer? Or is that only from the dealer or someone with a GAP tool?

Our trucks are electrically very sensitive. The PWM charging system is very aggressive and it would behoove you to run a battery reset when replacing the battery to allow the charging profile to adapt to the new battery vs applying an older/degraded charging profile on a new battery. Will it still work without the battery reset, yes, but your new battery might have a shorter life span. To put things into perspective, I'm on my 4th battery.

I've heard a few good things about the Autel AP200 and it can reset the battery. However, the Autel AP200 is no where near the GAP IID Tool capabilities. I would rank Autel AP200 as a budget code reader with added features to calibrate suspension, reset adaptation values, reset service intervals, battery reset, and a few other things. It's also under $70.

Never bothered with resetting for battery other than connecting neg and pos cables for about 10 minutes. Through one LR3 and one LR4 (since 2006) I have replaced 3 batteries (5 total including the originals) in 17 years. Current Battery is an Energizer AGM H8 and is approaching it's third year anniversary. I expect 5-6 years out of it.
