My speculation is that if the computers think a larger, higher-capacity battery is installed (H8)... it may possibly have the alternator "shut off" for longer periods to save 0.00425 mpg, give or take. I hate the charging system, and to date nobody has figured out how to bypass the fuel-sipping programming.

I changed mine to H8 with IID but never did the "reset" afterwards, ooops. So far, zero issues.
gsxr - Let's see...0.00425 mpg, that works out to about $11.42 saved in today's dollars, doesn't it? :)

I agree with your speculation. Makes sense that the sensor is going to communicate to the alternator based on the data it is given (if updated) or it has (if not updated). Supports the Garbage in/Garbage out concept. Currently considering purchase of a GAP IID Tool so I can perform these kind of tasks on my own. Though pricey, I imagine it will pay for itself in relatively short order.

Appreciate your thoughts/comments.

My neighbor that likes to work on cars came over to look at my 2011 LR4 engine and listen to it running. He said that he thought he might have heard some lifter noise and then pointed to a plastic cover that was not securely closed. He said, "You want to close that fuse box cover or you could get moisture inside of it and that will cause problems." It was too dark to see well, so I decided to look at it tomorrow. Turns out the "fuse box cover" was actually the cover for the battery compartment (as seen on these message boards). I messed with it a little and for some reason it doesn't want to close. I'll look at it tomorrow in the light and see what is keeping it from shutting.

What's keeping it from shutting is poor design and plastic manufacturing. Neither of mine in our 2 2013s ever really closed properly. It doesn't matter. Most batteries are right out there in the hot engine bay getting splashed like in my '04 Wrangler and those batteries seem to last longer than the "cooped up" BMW and LR batts. (probably because the BMW/LR electronic systems are so dam complicated/demanding compared to a TJ Wrangler.)

Hi Al Pizzica, yeah, I tried it this morning and got it close to closing, but it just wouldn't securely latch. I messed with it in all sorts of positions, but it either seemed to be binding up somewhere or when I did finally get it to close, the latch wouldn't stay latched into place and it would pop back up again. It's not really hurting anything the way that it is and the relay box is secured with its own separate cover underneath. Plus everything in the engine compartment is bone dry. I don't see moisture being a problem.

My battery cover has never closed correctly either. Never had a problem.

Also the noise your neighbor thinks is lifter noise, is probably just the fuel injectors. These engines are noisy.

I don't even have a cover on mine. It just gets in the way needing to use the compressor to air up after trails.
