Hello,
Just started my 2011 LR4 with 136k on it and heard this whining noise that gets louder with revs. There is also a noticeable ticking noise present which I am assuming is a different issue. Thanks for the help.

A little bit of ticking is normal but if it's noticeably louder than it is likely timing chains/tensioners/guides, have those ever been addressed? There was a design issue that caused the steel tensioners to wear through the guides causing excess wear and play in the timing chains. A cheater way to tell is to look through oils fill with a flashlight and a pick to see if there is excess chain play, I believe there is also a way to check timing chain play using the GAP IID tool.

Whining that gets louder with engine revs could be a several things, I would see if you can localize the sound by having someone rev the engine while your out front listening for the general area it's coming from with the hood open.

You able to post a video? (Most people upload it to YouTube and post the link here)

Maybe it's your viscous fan. Mine got stuck on, needed to be replaced.

Does it sound like a ton of air flow? Like a larger commercial truck?

The viscous fan can also be responsible for ticking sounds... this issue may be one in the same

I unfortunately missed my opportunity for a vide as the car is under cover now awaiting a NE snow storm. I have a feeling it may be the alternator as ktm525 was saying, but will take a look at the fan viscous fan as well. The reason I think alternator is that the other day I got the message about batter low, starting the car soon or something to that effect.

As far as the timing chain, when I check the tension in the oil filler, what is considered a lot of play when I pull on it, or is it one of those things that you'll know when you feel it? Thanks for the help!

whine = alternator, clock like tick = viscous fan, metallic rattling on startup =timing chain, general loudness = nothing.
I have a whining noise, only when the vehicle is idle, but in motion it goes away. Then the noise may leave all together on longer drives?

I'm beginning to think a GAP IID Tool is a must for these cars/trucks. It seems you can learn a lot from having one of these tools handy.
