christine1125: A blown head gasket does not need an engine replacement. The head gaskets along with many other preventative maintenance components can be replaced at a fraction of the cost of replacement engine.

Did the engine overheat when the head gasket blew? Or did the engine overheat leading to the head gasket subsequently blowing?

The engine on my 2011 LR4 with 100,000 miles may be just fine, but it is nice to know I have options. I'm taking it in to have its first oil change with a local certified mechanic. He is going to give it the once over in the process. I bought it locally and he was the one servicing it prior to the sale. I called him before pulling the trigger and he didn't see anything troubling in his notes on the vehicle. The engine is loud and it has a ticking noise on cold startup. Reading prior posts, seems likely to be the fan clutch, but who knows? Engine is responsive with plenty of power. Sounds a little like a diesel once it warms up, but everyone says these engines sound like that due to the fuel injectors. I'll know more soon.

I just got off the phone with the guy from Tapa. Seemed knowledgeable and was willing to spend the time to talk to me about everything under the sun. His main selling point is there are "known issues" with the 5.0L NA that he upgrades and corrects, creating a superior product with 0 miles upon delivery.

If the block or heads are warped, you will be better off replacing the engine.

Not true. Unlikely for a block to warp. A good machine shop will know the limits of how far they can mill the heads if they are warped. And if the heads are toast (say cracked or bearing shot), buy another on ebay and get it conditioned it at a machine shop. It is far cheaper than replacing an engine. Done it thrice.
