Yup,
Sounds like you do not have the active keyless entry. No buttons on the door handle= no active keyless entry. The dealer may have mislead you. 2011 you have to have the lux package to get active keyless entry. In the 2012 model they included it in the HSE package.

I love the passive entry system when I am the only one using the car. It causes grief when the kids or someone not familiar with it is getting in. As you note, people's first reaction is often to push the buttons to try to unlock the door or figure out what they do.
I don't know why LR decided to put the lock squares on the non-driver doors for '12. I can't really think off a situation where I would ask a passenger to lock the doors after we got out - perhaps after assisting my kids out of the back.
I will reiterate what you have otherwise read on this forum, you will love this truck.

I actually like that feature. I wind up locking it from the other doors all the time, but maybe that's because I'm dealing with the kids in the back seat.

I don't have kids but I agree. When I'm unloading things from the back seat I am often on the passenger side. It would be a pain to have to go all the way around just to lock it.

My 2011 LR4 didn’t come with the passive system. Does anyone know if I can upgrade my LR4/D4 to that system?

I have the same year and model, but mine is a Lux. The only time it comes into play is when I forget to unlock the rig with my key fob as I approach. I reach for the driver's door handle and the car reminds me that I'm not too bright and corrects me. (Sometimes I think I can hear it mocking me.)

Bottom line, I find the passive stuff a little gimmicky. It's like a novelty act. Once you've seen the rabbit pulled out of the hat a few times, it gets a bit old (annoying even). I suppose it comes down to personal preference, but I wouldn't feel cheated without it.
