Hello, 2015 LR4 here - 120k miles. Hoping someone can validate what my mechanic is telling me.

Slow/minor cooling leak. Took it to the mechanic and he indicated it’s the rear crossover pipe (heating manifold). $1,100 to replace/coolant/etc.

I’ve read reports of people saying water pump/front crossover/rear crossover are basically maintenance items. So I asked the mechanic “since you’re in there”, if he would be able to do the front crossover and the water pump as well. Obviously not expecting a freebie or anything, but maybe a bit of savings since he’s already well into things doing the rear anyway. He indicates there is no “overlapping service” at all between doing the rear crossover and the front and/or water pump.

Is this true or should I be looking for a new mechanic?

Secondly, does the price seem fair?

My 2cents: If he could get the rear crossover off without removing the supercharger, then it wouldn’t be $1100. Any removal of the SC makes the front pipes a 5 min job. Water pump and thermostat would be just a few minutes of extra work with everything off. Not sure why he’s saying that, but it doesn’t jive with my experience of doing the work and having the SC off twice now. Price is not fair for the rear only; would be fair for front and rear; and I would expect to pay a few hundred more for tstat and water pump.

Thanks. I believe he said the book stated about 4 hours of work, and when I specifically asked him if he needed to remove the SC to do this work, he sounded surprised and said he didn't think so/wasn't planning on removing it, no.

Not sure how you’d reach it without removing the supercharger. Maybe if you remove the windshield cowling - maybe disconnect the hood struts and let back on the windshield to get more room? At the very least, the wiring loom behind the supercharger needs to be removed, and that was probably the biggest PITA of the whole job.

If he can get the back off without removing the SC, then there is not too much overlapping service - but there is some with removing the wiring loom in the back. But if you are replacing the front, there is a lot of overlapping service with replacing the rear. Once the SC is off to replace the front pipe, replacing the rear is a 10 minute job.

As for price, I seem to recall people being charged about $2500 for front and rear, but I can’t remember for sure.

I’d just ask for a price on both - if it seems high, take it to a couple of other places and see who gives you the best price. I would not pay $1100 just to do the back when you need to get both taken care of.

Anyone who says "no overlapping service" is lying to you and trying to rip you off. As per jlglr4, once you are in there for the front crossover, the rear is a minimal additional task.

I do not see any way reasonably possible to do the rear without taking off the SC.

I would move on and find someone who is not trying to rip you off.

And there is no reason you cannot do those tasks yourself....

This is the group to help you, and if you are at all interested here is a video

the fact that your mechanic didn’t know that the supercharger needed to come out to do the crossover pipes is telling you that you need to find a new mechanic..
I never pull the supercharger to do the front crossover pipes.
Some 2018 Rovers you do, due to a different front crossover pipe setup.

Just the rear, not the front. Asked him again yesterday based on this thread and he re-confirmed what he originally stated, which is that he does NOT need to remove the SC to replace the rear crossover. Windshield cowling, wiring loom, yes. SC, no.
