dropped the LR4 off at the mechanic's to diagnose the misfire codes. looks like there is coolant leaking into cylinders 3 and 4 per the borescope.

is it worth it to have the head gaskets redone or is a used engine the better bet? prior to my buying the LR4 the head gaskets had been done by a shop out east. i have a sneaking suspicion that the engine was overheated at some point causing the original head gasket leak and possibly warped the heads or the deck leading to the current head gasket leak.

but, feel free to talk me off the ledge or, if more helpful in the long run, gently push me towards the edge and a new/used engine.

Head gaskets, no guarantee.
Used engine, don't know the history on it.
New engine, expensive. But, you won't have to worry about any issues in the future.

that's what the research i've been doing seems to indicate.

so, with that in mind, i poured a bottle of K-Seal Ultimate in the expansion tank. after driving around for a day, the misfires are gone and the check engine light has turned itself off and stayed off for the last week or so.

yes, i know i'm on borrowed time and yes, i know i've probably ****** the cooling system and radiator. guess i'll keep parking it on the street and see if someone totals it before the engine catastrophically overheats.

in your area, what does it cost to do head gaskets on these engines?

Sold it to someone (basically for parts) that was going to attempt to fix it. Came real close to putting a reman engine in it for $10k, but ultimately decided to cut my losses. Stress levels have never been lower.

I threw a reman engine in and got about 50k miles out of it. Now I’m having a junkyard 5.0 rebuilt by Euro Amp and I’ll toss it in there along with their metal cooling system parts.

If this fails I’m buying a D110 and turning the LR4 into a sight target at the ranch.

How’s this temporary fix working so far?
