Hi all! I just got my LR4 a month ago. 70k miles and a 2012. The check engine light is on and always says coolant level low and also windshield wiper fluiid low. . I top off the coolant frequently and have never had any issues and also the wiper fluid is still full, maybe a clog idk. Anyways, I just got an oil change and they didn’t top off my fluid for the coolant and it overheated today which has never happened This occurred after I ran my codes which were P0402, C0300, P0174. I accidentally erased the codes! Grrrr. I started it up and got a half mile and it started overheating. Luckily , I was right by an auto store so I waited awhile and topped off the coolant but it was totally empty and not at the mark it usually is! Btw I just got my oil changed three days ago. One would think they would top that off for me, but I guess not SMH. so when it filled to the fill line it started pouring out and went back to the level it usually is at. I had it it towed home, and waited a long time to put coolant in again and like before when it hit the fill line it started leaking and went back down to the level that it is usually at… again. A friend who is a mechanic sent me this text of what it might be:
  1. A failing leak detection pump may be the main issue, caused by wear and tear, electrical problems, or mechanical issues.
  2. Damaged wiring in the pump control circuit can result in inaccurate voltage readings.
  3. In rare instances, a faulty PCM might be misinterpreting the pump circuit signal.
Any thoughts? Also the previous owner didn’t get the recall of the fuel pump fixed, could this also be a cause? Sorry for the long message but I am super worried, I’m a single mom, my house was just hit by hurricane Milton and the best part is Christmas is next month!!!!!! AWESOME

@CindyLR4 , you have exposed a number of issues.
Correct, the first thing to contend with is an overheating engine.
But, I’m afraid you didn’t provide enough pertinent information for us.
1. I suppose your “overheated” light came on. Did you stop the vehicle immediately or did you wait until the engine stopped on its own.
2. what do you mean by “pouring out”.
3. “who” did the oil change? The dealer? An LR specialist? Or some oil change shop with monkeys with wrenches?

Also, just clearing codes is what many do…. but codes give us important information. The codes you read were through a generic reader…. those are not LR codes. Proper LR codes would be helpful.

It looks like your “friend” did a google search …. proper diagnostics require an investigative process. Arbitrarily swapping parts is no one to perform a root cause analysis and appropriate fix.

Can you provide more information please.
Cheers

those codes are really not connected to coolant leaks and overheating. likely you have cracked or leaking coolant crossover tubes [front] and/or rear heat manifold leaks. both are plastic and if they have not been replaced prior, at 13 yrs old and 70k miles are shot. If coolant is allowed to get low, you could have had an air pocket in the system, thus the overheating. hopefully you did not warp the heads/block and a competent shop can replace the pipes, thermostat housing and hoses including the water pump, then vacuum fill the sustem to remove all the air. sorry to hear about your home and milton...best of luck..

Can you tell where it is leaking from when you attempt to fill? Maybe you're "lucky" and it's just the coolant expansion tank that failed. But generally, a coolant low warning is indicative of a more serious issue, especially if the condition of the cooling system is unknown.

And... with these engines you really don't want to mess around with a leaky engine; there are two components that when they fail they can fail dramatically; as mentioned above it's the front and rear crossover pipes, for some context:

Front crossover:

Rear crossover:

The rear one is not OE (not Land Rover) so I'd buy this one:

Cost to replace will not be cheap as there's quite a lot of work to replace them. Location of the leak is paramount to the folks here helping you.

As long as it showed up in a comment above:

Regarding the fuel flange recall.

Red Rover 2015, completed recall at the Dallas dealership - no issues.
White Rover 2016, completed recall - local Houston dealer did a botched job, ongoing fuel leaks until I could get it to another dealership Rochester, NY to repair - they did find an issue and repaired it - monitoring, but it's away at school, so few data points - ok so far.
Sand Rover, 2013 - based on the experience above, and that all 3 Rover dealerships in Houston are goofballs, I will not have the recall completed until I have an indication of a problem - no issues with the factory flange - so far.

If anyone is interested, I have detailed videos for the coolant project on the V6 and the V8 out there on youtube. Great cure for your insomnia...

I am so sorry I have not responded, I had a death in the family and have been out of town. Ok so I got my coolant issue diagnosed today. He said this is what needs to be fixed:

Oil cooler assembly
Water pump replacement
Thermostat
Intake manifold gaskets

My question is the oil cooler assembly the same as an engine sensor? I know dumb questions
Also, any thoughts on this diagnosis?? I truly appreciate all the replies, and to the ghosting comment, that made me cry laugh!!!!! I actually was just ghosted for the first time in my life so no…. I wasn’t ghosting y’all!!! I have been in Ohio for a funeral. So sorry for my delay!

@CindyLR4 , welcome back!
Sorry to hear of your loss.

Now we are getting somewhere. You started this thread with the title “coolant leaking”. And it is possible that it is leaking from many places, though that would be very rare, indeed.

Coolant can leak at the oil cooler.
It can leak at the pump.
It can leak at the thermostat.
But I’m not sure how the intake manifolds relate.

Is this diagnosis from an LR dealer? or specialist? or?
You may be surprised to learn that the costs vary, very little but the quality of work can.
Others may disagree, but I would only use oem parts. After all… they lasted this long…

As for your sensor question, there are many sensors on the engine. Which one?
Cheers
(glad I could inspire the laugh)
