air suspension requires special lift?

I was told by a local garage that that they can't work on any Rover with an air suspension system because it requires a special lift system to raise the car without damaging the rubber air shocks. Is this true?

I have a 99 d2 w/ sls and no it doesn't requier a special lift. Once they take the weight off of the rear shocks, they will deflate. As soon as it is started (with all doors closed) the shocks will reinflate.

Some of the old Rangies used to need to be lifted in a certain way but not the SLS system.

Thanks for the info guys. Would you happen to know which classic Range Rovers need to be lifted a special way, and what that way is?

All Range Rovers with air suspension (air suspension came in 93 on the Classic LWB model) through the P38 (4.0 and 4.6) up to the new body in 2003 must be lifted by their wheels or axles. The air springs themselves are not strong enough to support the weight of the axles hanging down. The springs will either unseat themselves from the upper mounts or tear (if they are already worn and cracked). Don't ask why I know.
