Well, I finally got my head around the idea that its time to get rid of the LR4. Most of you probably haven't seen the issues I have posted about, but in short, I have exhaust gas leaking into the cooling system. Assuming blown head gasket or cracked head... I just don't have the time/space to fix it myself, and my wife won't get on board with spending the money to have it "fixed" or replace the motor. So here we are. Unfortunately, I can't sell it as a fully functioning vehicle... but it pains me to sell something (essentially for parts) that looks and rides as good as it does... and oddly, the motor still runs great, but will eventually completely fail. Fortunately, I have a semi-interested buyer (that is well aware of the problems), however, I am going to remove a few of the accessories and sell them separately in an attempt to recover some of the losses. If anyone is interested in the following, please let me know.

GAP iiD Tool BT G3
Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller (with mounting hardware and plug-in wiring harness)
OE Land Rover Roof cross bars (with 2 keys)

So, with that, I leave you a little poorer, humbler, and with a bruised ego. I want to thank all of you for your help and support while I have been here. This is by far the best community of car enthusiasts I have ever joined.

Aww... Stories like this pains me. I was in a pretty bad pickle myself and decided to keep mine running. I honestly think that it's just head gaskets that need to be replaced, BUT its an intense job with a hefty price tag. I've removed the heads, few bolts short of doing the head gaskets. I know there's a possibility that you'll find more things to replace to be preventative. The cost is pretty significant even if you're good with your hands like I am. It's a fair assessment to cut your loses.

Best of luck!!

I was very close to putting a new motor in it. Unfortunately, a new motor does not mean you will have a trouble-free vehicle... and dealing with the non-motor related issues after spending the money on a new motor was not something I was willing to do.

Tough decision, I know! I’m just about to put in a new timing chain-everyone thinks I’m crazy to spend the money, but I just can’t let go just yet. 268,000 miles!

The only viable replacements are a Gwagon, Landcruiser, 4Runner, Bronco or Wrangler. That's it as far as I know for a body on frame SUV with a fully locking transfer case.

2 of those are just as expensive (if not more) than a LR. 2 have much less interior volume than a LR4 and one is a Jeep.

If you look at it from the perspective of replacing the capability you already have, that engine replacement cost starts to not look so large. I doubt you would get into any of those options in good condition for less than the cost of an engine in the LR4.

Good luck with whatever choice you make.

A few more: Lexus GX550, GMC Yukon AT4, Ineos Grenadier. All new so much more expensive than tossing in a rebuilt engine into the LR4. Why not try to diesel "upgrade" while you are at it?

First gen cayenne could be had with a proper transfer case and a locking or limited slip rear diff. Could be had with a diesel too.

Making that choice would also require the clown putting on the make-up meme.
