So today I got out of my vehicle and noticed a knocking coming from the engine!! I immediately suspected a timing chain and shut her down. I hadn’t heard the noise when driving, engine temp and performance were good. No warning lights, oil level is full. I got her towed to my regular mechanic who is now performing the diagnoses. He hasn’t taken a look inside by his initial impression from the noise is it could need an engine transplant. I’m surprised because i didn’t notice any noise or performance change when driving. She’s a 2012, V8, 195000km. Any pearls of wisdom?

The timing chain noise usually manifests at start up and then goes away, eventually becoming louder all the time. If the knock you are hearing is lower in one perhaps it is a bearing knock? Either way, yikes!

You are on the Bruce peninsula?

A quick update on the repair. My mechanic has diagnosed the problem as a sheared timing chain tensioner bolt. It sheared inside the block so he is working to drill it out and replace like for like or oversize the hole and add a helicoil.

That beats an engine replacement any day of the week! Good luck.

im curious to the cost of that repair.

your mileage and year leans towards eventual timing chain guide issue. would this be somthing worth doing during this repair? I imagine the labor to get to the bolt is similar.

DaytonaRS7 I discussed this with my mechanic and he has checked the guides and chain and all looks well so he is advising against a chain change at this time.

Idk I’d throw the new guides and tensioners in there with the simplified procedure. Your timing seems fine so you can catch it before you need to take the valve covers off. It’ll be $300ish in parts now or $5k+ at some point after you button it back up almost guaranteed
