Hi Forum,

I own a 2005 LR3 with 190,000 miles and always wanted an LR 4. I am very apprehensive about buying one because of the timing chain issues, water pump and engines going out. From my research, it seems the 2013 model is the preferred model by LR4 enthusiasts. I found 2013 with 51,000 miles

At what mileage do you expect to see the timing chain issues ? are they a reliable car and what is realistic mileage to get from them? I hear they are very different from LR3s. Does 2014 also have timing chain issues? Ant feedback will be highly appreciated

Timing chain should not be an issue on a 2013. A 2014 will have a v6. Different engine and as far as I'm aware no timing chain issues. Updating the timing chain, if needed, on 2010-2012 models will likely run around $5k. Not cheap, but also could still make a lot of sense if you find and older one you like. Doesn't seem to be any consistent mileage. There were several reports of issues at very low mileage and I've seen trucks with 200k and no issues.

2013 is preferred by enthusiasts because it’s the the last year to get the 5.0 V8 which is pretty much universally preferred over the SCV6.

With regards to the timing chain issue I think as previously mentioned, it’s a bit of a crap shoot. There are many stories of LR4s with high miles and no issues but, of course, not all. I would not worry about that with a 2013. I don’t think at at 51k you are going to see that raise it’s head yet.

Im looking at purchasing a 2016 lr4. Found a silver edition with the heavy duty package with 25k or a landmark edition 18k miles and no HD. Im trading my paid off honda pilot that has been awesome for hauling kids for a used lr4 with a payment....am I crazy?
