Hey, all. We have a 2005 LR3 that had no prior known issues and recently started smoking pretty heavily from exhaust- only for a few (3-5) seconds at startup... Looks more white but upon closer observation today, might be slightly blue. The smell is hard to identify b/c it smells slightly like burning plastic but also slightly like fuel- really no strong odor to it. The weirdest part is- after having 2 mechanic friends check things out, there doesn't appear to be any crossing or loss of fluids, and it runs perfectly fine. Only other issue was a misfire on only cyl 2, 4, 6, 8 found a few days ago when codes were read- it was cleared and hasn't reoccurred. We bought this recently and dealer did say he washed under hood (who does that?!) Not sure if that has anything to do with it. Maybe water somewhere it shouldn't be? It's going to garage tomorrow (dealer paying!) But I'm not totally stumped here and hoping someone might've seen something similar? Thanks in advance!
My random guess is that fuel is making its way into the combustion chamber of 1 or more cyliders casuing an temporary rich fuel/air mixture at startup. I would think something is either sticking or slightly worn, allowing fuel to enter, which would be why it is only at startup and ends almost immediately. If you are in Harrisburg, I would suggest taking it over to Trevor at British 4X4 - if there is a lot of investigative work involved he will be less expensive than the dealer and will surely have seen it before (unless it is somethign really odd). http://www.british4x4specialists.com/
posted this same info on another "smoking LR3" thread, maybe applies to you also? not sure this will help you out but my wife also had some significant smoke out of nowhere in our 07 HSE a while back i forget if there were mobility issues or not - but i recall the smoke being white with maybe slight blue tint had CEL error codes, not sure about dash warnings so i cleaned the TB, new OEM PCV valve, ran a bottle of techron, and new OEM MAF sensor also changed the oil and got an analysis on the unknown oil - came back very healthy (no water - whew!) our first LR, bought it with 116k miles, this happened around 120k miles (welcome to LR huh?) now have 140k miles and havent had codes or a similar issue since . . . just other issues LOL
Check valve guide seals common problem with overhead cams that are getting up in miles and having cats the oil smell and a lot of the blue is gone by the time you see it. Hope it helps used to see it many times not necessarily a river issue any overhead cams tend to do it more than std engine 30 plus years auto shops dealers and my own in fact just had to fix my wife's volvo same issue good luck
Your injectors on that bank may be leaking which is loading the cylinders with excess fuel causing an overly rich condition for a few seconds at start up. Try a can of BG66 and cross your fingers.
