OBD II questions

Besides being able to read codes with an OBD scanner what else will i be able to do with this scanner. I am thinking of purchasing the connector with some software for my laptop. Will this software actually work with an 01' Discovery.

If you are getting the software version, most of these will do:

Read/Clear error codes
monitor O2 sensors
Show air temp, fuel temp, rpm, throttle position, speed of vehicle....etc...

Any recommended Software for this? I can purchase the OBD to serial cable for pretty cheap, are there any free software packages anyone knows of?
