Only "shield" is the bracket for the fuel lines.

It started, on the first try too.

Doesn't sound great though. I'm pretty sure it is just that the transmission doesn't have enough fluid in it. I only took a couple liters before it started spilling out, which is not enough given that I had the transmission out for service. After running for a few seconds I managed to get another liter in there, still not enough. Only engine code was P132B-36 (supercharger boost control performance - frequency modulation failure - frequency is too low)

It is getting dark and I'll take my win for the day and put my tools away so I don't get EEE.

Think I found the source of the noise, starter gear is clashing with the flywheel. A couple of washers might be a short term fix. Thinking I'll get some gasket material and hope it is thick enough.

^^ Agreed.

Starter bendix may be binding. Not fully retracting, keeping the starter drive gear out further than it should be.

Flywheel and starter can really only go in one way each. I noticed considerable overlap between the starter and the flywheel on the first motor. Didn't think it was right, but thought once the starter was energized once it might retract a bit more. Forgot to address it with the second motor, but I remember it being not as bad.

Probably should get a new starter, but they're out of stock on rock auto and O'Reilly's. Next time I order from Atlantic I'll get one. My temporary (permanent) fix was to grind the teeth back about an 1/8th and put a fresh chamfer on the leading edge.

Managed to get the remainder of the 5L jug of ATF into the transmission and went down to the dealership for an additional quart, $103. Even the guys at the parts counter were shocked. I should have called the BMW dealer across the street and asked for their price on 8 speed ATF.

Before I start putting the bumper and wheel well liners in what else should I do at this disassembled state? Replace the front valve block?

$103 US for a quart?
