Flywheel and starter can really only go in one way each. I noticed considerable overlap between the starter and the flywheel on the first motor. Didn't think it was right, but thought once the starter was energized once it might retract a bit more. Forgot to address it with the second motor, but I remember it being not as bad.
Probably should get a new starter, but they're out of stock on rock auto and O'Reilly's. Next time I order from Atlantic I'll get one. My temporary (permanent) fix was to grind the teeth back about an 1/8th and put a fresh chamfer on the leading edge.
Managed to get the remainder of the 5L jug of ATF into the transmission and went down to the dealership for an additional quart, $103. Even the guys at the parts counter were shocked. I should have called the BMW dealer across the street and asked for their price on 8 speed ATF.
$103 US for a quart?
