2013 LR4 V5.0 - All of a sudden P0087 and "Restricted Performance". Did some analysis and found DTC for Fuel Rail Low Pressure and Injector Codes. Cleaned MAF, MAP and checked tank pump pressure (OK). Took to dealer and they said High Pressure Pump failed - est $3200. Except driving to dealer performance was good at 70 MPH, but hard starting. Checked Land Rover Forum and noted use of BG 44K cleaned system and made problem disappear.

Removed car from dealer without any work being performed and drove for a couple of days with fuel system cleaner. Difficult starting continued for another day as long as "Restricted Performance" was set by ECM. Then, all problems cleared and "Restricted Performance" no longer appeared. After a couple of days, check engine also cleared. Car runs like a champ, without any parts being replaced.

That’s amazing. Do you know on what basis the dealer diagnosed the hp fuel pump failure?

(BTW, $3200 for the HP fuel pumps seems crazy high to me. A few years ago, that’s what I thought the timing chain would cost. Seems like everything has doubled).

Stealership trying to markup unnecessary parts and labor to make some money on unsuspecting folks. Sad, but they're a business for profit too.

Anyhow, glad you didn't have to do the hpfps. They're easy to diy replace them if you ever have to replace.

Use the iid tool to check live values for Fuel Pressure, it should be around 1200-1500 psi under load.

I eventually learned the dealership pretty much diagnoses issues by running codes and cross referencing what part that means it should throw at the vehicle. Not a whole lot of troubleshooting going on, and definitely not much thought towards low-cost solutions to potentially high-dollar problems.

Pretty much why the dealership should probably be where you go only when under warranty.

I had the same thing. Turned out the battery went on the fritz. Then the secondary one. Prior to this the alternator died after being cooked during an excursion into a mud pit.

But the low pressure pump output is dependent on the voltage somewhat. So check the lp /primary (can’t remember what Land Rover call it) pressure at idle and at fast idle then underway before stumping up the cash to replace anything.

At least this is what happened to me.

Good luck.

Met with Service Director to explain what occurred and to help them improve their service. He was a fan of BG 44K, but said Land Rover does not permit them to use BG products. They are restricted to follow LR service procedures. Sounds like LR wants to sell parts and does not give dealers the opportunity to be creative with customers. LR4 was not under warranty. LR4 running great. p.s. Dealer refunded service check cost because their diagnosis was not correct.

You should ask about this TSB.
