2013 LR4 has developed a roaring sound from engine. It's worse at initial start, but is louder while driving than it used to be. The little girl down the street said it sounds like the garbage truck..... It runs fine, but would like for it to run quiet like it used to. No codes, lights or warnings.

Like a roaring fan sound from the front? I think of you search there are reports of the fan clutch going bad and having this problem. It's not a terribly difficult fix. Both LR4s we had have this roar at first and then it quiets down. If it isn't quieting down it's probably that viscous fan clutch.

Attached is the cooling system overview and page 9 details the fan and viscous clutch.

If the radiator fan on the 4 is the same setup as my 3, you have what is called an electro-viscous fan clutch coupling.

Most fan clutch couplings are merely viscous which means that the fan feels the air temperature coming off the radiator and engages as required. Land Rover adds an additional complication - the viscous clutch is also controlled electrically - that is the viscous part of the clutch might wish to engage or let go, but the electrical part overrides the viscous.

As above, while it is common for the fan to engage and roar at startup for maybe a minute or so on a colder day, and I suppose when the engine is hot, while one hears it at startup, one does not normally hear the fan noise when driving.

In your case, something is wrong with I suppose the electric portion of the clutch and it will not let go. I suppose failing so the fan is engaged is preferable to the reverse.

For me, it was a new fan/clutch assembly - they are not free either.

Check the fan belt and pulley housing. I had similar symptoms and it was the belt, dealer had installed a shorter belt than required and the bolt heads had sheared off, roaring sound. New bolts and proper belt and good as new.

Really appreciate all of the input. It gives me a place to start. The "sounds like a garbage truck" comment from the kid down the street that got me moving on this. :)

This is the hub I was talking about. The bolt heads sheared, dealer put in a 720 belt instead of a 745. The water pump is behind the hub, studs came out by hand. Middle pic shows it all replaced.

Mine makes that noise but only when I listen to “Fuel” by Metalica & the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. I tend to floor it.

Otherwise, my wager is on the viscous clutch. ;)
