Correct, change the fluid and then go for a drive.
Look at my signature block… this is how it has been done for all my vehicles.
I only use oem fluids and filters.

That's quite the JLR salvo you have...

Will continue to do my research, I realize there's some recent threads on here about doing the transmission pan/fluid so I'll scan through those again (I didn't realize this would be on my agenda so soon but it seems like a smaller project than the timing chains so perhaps I'll do this first!). I watched the Atlantic British video and that helped explain a few more details; the learning process has to start somewhere! Thanks for your help and guidance.

So I'm still learning... It strikes me there's a bunch of stuff that can be done (parts may be wrong in the links below so don't use these as a basis for ordering):

- Fluid and filter change
- Solenoid change
- Sealing sleeves
- Zip kit

I'm still trying to figure why folks do the Zip kit; the sealing sleeves and solenoids seem relevant when shifting is pretty poor or slipping occurs or there's a "klunk" when dropping from second to first gear... Given I don't have a lift this seems like a nasty messy job!

After my fluid change (couple years ago now, done by a LR indy shop), I sometimes get a hard downshift from 2nd to 1st that I don't remember being there before. It's not consistent, so I haven't bothered to do anything about it. Is this a sign they messed something up?

This is one of the things that I came across during initial research; it suggests some issues with the sealing sleeves I believe (and possibly solenoids). I'd only do that particular work if the problem is getting worse or I was in there for another reason. Start here, it mostly BMW but it's the same transmission:

Truly, I don’t over think it.
If there are no codes; Change the fluid and filter. Period.
If there are codes being thrown, apply the fix. The fix “may” be the zip kit. Or just the manufacturers repair kit.

FWIW, mine are all original, minus the fluid and filters, of course.
One of my 6hp transmissions (on the car I drive the hardest) has nearly 165,000 kms. And I mean hard. (for some unknown reason, the rear tires wear twice as quickly as the fronts;)
The 8hp in the LR4 is way up there too. It does go well off the road and trail. And I typically don’t drive that vehicle over 135 km/hr on the freeway. Again, just fluids and filter.

Currently, you have provided no evidence that entails anything more than just a fluid change is well overdue.

Hope this helps and alleviates any worries.
Cheers.

Or just a sign that the adaptive handling would benefit from a reset…. fwiw, I “reset” all my vehicles every spring.

I had similar weird issues with the trans in my 2013 and thought it was on the way out at 95k two summers ago.
I did one fluid change with Lubeguard and that helped a lot but not 100% (you can't get all the fluid out in one change).
I then did the zipkit and another fluid change maybe 2k miles later with filter and Lubeguard and now at 113k it is shifting like near new. If you are in there to do a zipkit or filter change it is easy to change the solenoids and I probably should have done this but I was sure I was going to fry the transmission doing the zipkit so I cheaped out.
I did not do ANYTHING to the computer or adaptations on the advice here and of our indy shop.

Folks,

Thanks for the advice. For now I'm going to try the filter and oil replacement (using ZF fluid). I'll see how that goes, if it's still not right I'll start looking at the solenoids and zip kit but I tend to agree that with no codes I'd be throwing money at a problem that doesn't exist. I'll report back with details as I proceed... No plans to change adaptations given I'm just doing a fluid change.

OK, so here are the parts I ended buying.

LubeLocker ($32.95 - out the door $46.92):
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/LUB-LLT-F6R80

Lifeguard Fluid 6 (it was on sale 6 bottles for $86.72 (out the door)):
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0785H9516/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Atlantic British Transmission Kit ($234.95):
https://www.roverparts.com/transmission/kits/ATFCKOME/

Valve Body Sleeve TZV500010 ($20.95):
https://www.roverparts.com/transmission/gaskets-seals/TZV500010G/

ZF Lifeguard 6 Transmission Fluid LRN13754 ($24.95 - so I have 7 liters):
https://www.roverparts.com/transmission/transmission-gearbox-oils/LRN13754ZF/

With shipping the British Atlantic stuff came to $295.36.

I did spend some time trying to figure out the difference between these two British Atlantic kits:

https://www.roverparts.com/transmission/kits/ATFCKOME/ (the one I bought for $234.95)

and

https://www.roverparts.com/transmission/kits/ATFCK/ ($149.95)

I think the former is made by ZF and the later is probably a copy, photos to follow of the parts.
