When did your crossover go and is your climate HOT (CA, NM, AZ, TX, LA, etc) or COOL (PNW, northeast, etc)

I did my front crossover when I replaced the original water pump at 85K miles. The flanged ends were a bit brittle and were starting to deteriorate. I think it was definitely at the very end of its life. I did the rear crossover/heater manifold at 95K miles and it still looked new. I know for sure neither had ever been replaced because I bought it from original owner and friend and know the complete history.

Drying out the rubber o-rings sooner. Just anecdotal.

Could be although bathed on one side by coolant vapours? The failure point point seems to be actual crumbling of the end tube that inserts into block.

What I saw when I replaced mine (and it broke) looked more like the rubber O-ring had been leaching plasticizers from the tube. And since the tube is thin right there anyway, to create a recess for the O-ring, it got really brittle and just crumbled. That was at 47k miles.
