Hi everyone, I need your help about LR4 V8 5.0. Today at home, we have an LR3 V6 4.0 and a Disco 1 V8 3.9, but my wife is very interested to add to our Land Rover fleet an LR4 V8 5.0.

Please if you can give us some advise about the model, we will really appreciatte.

The one we found by now is:
LR4 V8 5.0 litres
HSE Version with DVD Screen on rear seats.
100.000 miles (174.000 kms)
all maintenances done with Land Rover specialist mechanics
colour black with black windows (original tinted)

Some risks to take care?

There are many discussions on this s search for them, but some of the highlights are:

1) Transmission fluid change should have been done by now
2) Timing chain needs to be monitored in case it needs attention
3) cooling system (cross-over pipe and water pump) are a weak point.
4) Lower control arm bushings are usually changed well before 100k miles.
5) electronic parking brake is expensive to repair if it doesn't work.
6) Records of frequent oil changes are important.

It has just a smidge more power than that old Ford V6...

i recently picked up a LR4 (with 5.0 V8) with 140k miles.
CARFAX indicated it was maintained at the dealer through 125k miles.

But since i wasn't sure what exactly was done during the maintenance..i did the following as preventative:
replace PCV valves
replaced air filters (cabin and engine)
replaced front and rear crossover pipes
replaced coolant
replaced spark plugs
cleaned throttle body
Oil and filter change
Replaced transmission filter and pan.
Replaced transmission fluid (2x) - in order to get as much of the old stuff out.
Replaced diff fluids (front and rear)
Replace transfer case fluid
Ran a can of BG 44K though the fuel tank

Repairs that were needed:
vacuum pump gasket - oil leak at front of engine
bad left lower control arm - squeaked over bumps.

Optional repair i chose to have done:
Parking brake was broken. Required new actuator. $800 part, $1000 labor. (USD)

Id really recommend you check the timing chain before purchase. Use a long screwdriver and poke at the chain from through the oil fill cap (with engine off). if its loose, its a sign of failing chain tensioner ($$$$). use your judgement and compare to how taught a bicycle chain should be.

There is quite a bit hate on the 5.0 V8 - mostly by 4.4 v8 folks, who secretly wish they had the 75 extra hp - but I absolutely love mine. I think it's a solid engine and has been serving me well for two years now. You do have to stay on top of a few specific failure points - water pump, coolant crossover pipes(front and rear) and 5-7500 mile oil changes using proper oil are absolutely mandatory. I think it is a very solid motor as long as you stay on top of maintenance and keep an eye out for noises/other odd behavior.

Feels light and nimble for a heavy beast
Faster than my D5 supercharged!!

Drove the V6 and it was severely underpowered and sounded horrible in my opinion. I was thinking about upgrading to a 2016 a few years back. I have a 2011 V8 and i’m so lucky to have one. It’s the preferred engine to have for these trucks. Solid and reliable once those above mentioned services are taken care of. The fuel savings in regards to the V6 is VERY minimal...like maybe 1-2mpg better than the V8? Not worth it in my opinion. The engine also sounds amazing if you ever want to take the muffler/resonator off, but that’s just my taste. All in all, please do go with the V8. The V8 rigs hold their value better than the V6 as well.

The V6 struggled in the Explorer, I can't imagine what it was like with an extra 1500lbs to haul around
