well i just read through this entire thread. i was really set on getting a used LR3. I was looking at getting a 06 or 07. Almost everyone here has an 05. I know it was the first year with the new body style and what not. Do the rest of the years have the same problems? should i look to something else?

The later models are better. Even the '05s are better once they've had all the fixes.

Here is my advice; and this is just my opinion of course:

Write down what you really want out of your next vehicle. If reliability and fuel economy are on the top of the list, don't get an LR3. If driving experience and off-road ability are near the top, then get one.

fuel economy ive already decided to rule out. i just sold my heavily modded TA, so i know about bad mpgs. Honestly, its more looks that I want it for than anything. Reliability would be nice. Are they better than Jags?

I knows someone that owns a dealership and they say that the LR3 is vastly superior to the Discoverys and RR's in terms of reliability. He says that once the known few fixes have been done under warranty, then the LR3's reliability is on par with most large SUVs, but probably not quite up to Toyota. But if you're trying to decided between a domestic SUV and an LR3, then reliability should not be a factor in the decision, as they are about the same.

Sure...I'd agree with that. Nino...try the GX470. It would benefit from the Toyota/Lexus reputation for stellar reliability, and at the same time it ought to be fairly capable.

The best advice, Nino, really....is take your time and go drive everything and anything you want; then decide. I knew that the LR3 was a first-year model when I bought it and I had my reasons for not waiting. I knew that the Land Rover brand was not known for reliability...but that was the car I liked the best, and I'd driven just about everything. I had to wait 6 months for an HSE, but my decision stood. I've had a litany of problems with my '05 but I do not regret buying it....I love it. However, one of my primary requirements is off-road ability, because I do go out. If not for that, I would've bought something less capable and more sporty, like an X5. Reliability is a single criterion. Develop your set (of criteria) and then go out and drive a bunch of cars and SUVs and you'll know the right choice.

Good luck.

FWIW, our '06 LR3 has been about equal in reliability to our '03 GX470 that we had for four years, which is to say very reliable. The only small problems for both can be attributed to both respective dealers, not the manufacturer. Both were and are far more reliable than the ML (frightful), Jeep Grd Cher, Porsche Cayman, and various Subarus I've had.

I now pick my cars by lease/buy, convenience of dealer location, warranty, and loaner car policy; irrespective of reliability ratings. The Jeep and Suby's were very deficient in this regard, and made life a living hell with problems requiring multiple visits. I almost look forward to problems with the LR3 and Cayman, as the dealer location, experience and loaner cars/trucks make it all positive.
