2001 Freelander Clutch

Hi there - query from a newbee... almost impossible to change gear and requires v hard pressure on the clutch, almost through the floor, to get the free movement through the gears. Clutch seems ok though and no sign of slippage. Any ideas? Could this be a problem with hydraulics or cable? It seems to be getting worse too. Thanks...
