While working in the bush I stopped the rover, on a very steep hill. when I came back could not persuade it to crank. Dragged it to a safe level spot with a dozer (about 500 m) and bypassed the neutral inhibitor switch and started the engine, however could not select any gear - selector moves back and forth, revs drop a little but no sign of movement, and if revs are not allowed to drop right back there is a slight grating when moving back to park, as if the locking pawl is dragging across something. ideas please...

I would check to make sure nothing has cause issues with the linkage on the transmission and the transfer case. Sounds to me like it isn't in proper gear.
