My '00 disco 2 started smoking after I switched to Castrol edge 10-40
Is this a commin thing? Do I need to switch back to conventional oil?

I'm running Castrol Edge Titanium 5W30 in my 2002 with no ill effects. Runs nice an cool with perfect idle. You must be running Castrol Edge Syntec, which should be fine. Before every oil change you should throw a can of BG44K in the gas tank.

It is not because of the oil. How many miles on your engine, is the smoke coming from the tail pipe and what color is it?

I am running syntec edge.229000 mi
It just started after I changed from conventional oil. Probably just a coincidence. Not at idle, not at speed, just at take off or hard accelleration. I need to drive it again and check the color. I know blue is oil smoke. It could be fuel smoke, it does need an O2 sensor, lean upstream bank 2,
It's my wifes daily driver, so I don't get to drive it often.

I would suggest a compression test and possibly a leak down test also to rule out rings with your mileage.
