So, I starterd the land rover tonight, and i heard a knocking under the hood. after a few minutes of running it got louder.. I checked the oil and it was a bit low, so I topped it off.. In my experiences in the past adding oil usualy solved such problems, however after I added the oil the noise got worse. It's possible that maybe it's not in the engine, but I can't tell. Any thoughts?

I would say either the pick up tube in the oil pan has either clogged or fallen off, or you may have a cracked manifold....

Or worse case the oil pump has just about kicked the bucket.

relief.. sort of

Well, after the engine cooled down I started it. No noise, yay I think!...

but then it started again. Seems that in my fit of nervousness I misdiagnosed the problem as engine noise, and it's the alternator. I'm going to search through the archives since I know there have been alot of postings about alternators here.

thanks for your help.
