Atomatic selector gaiter

I have a 2005 Freelander 1 TD4 and the gaiter on the automatic selector lever is gatting a bit tatty. I purchased a new leather one from E-bay, which was advertised as specifically for this model, but my mechanic, who can usually solve any problem, says he cannot see how to fit it without the plastic surround. I have looked all over but cannot find a new gaiter withthe surround. Sellers say can use old surround. Is there a special way of doing this?
