Hello and sorry if this is a redundant topic. I have found a well priced 97 with an auto tranny. I have no seat time in a defender so I've come here. Is the automatic a real hinderence to the drivability of the D90? Is it less reliable? Should I just keep shopping until I find a manual? Thanks in advance. alastair.

Welcome to the forum... oddly enough the Auto may be a better option. The standard Transmission can have some issues that may less than desirable. I personally haven't driven a Standard in a Land Rover. But I have heard of issues as well as when clutch replacement happens it will not be fun.

Thanks for the reply. I have heard some gripes about defender gearboxes over the years too: Mostly about the quality of the shift action itself.

I wasn't going to mention what I had heard there, since you seem to have wanted a standard.
