freelander wont start

hello
i have a free lander 98 1.8 petrol was driving fine until yesterday when it seemed to run out of petrol
even though it hadn't the pump is working theres a spark but it just keeps turning over with out firing
although first thing this morning it did fire only once though the alarm as for what i can make out is working ok
any advice would be a predicated
