Knocking from rear

Hi All, I have a freelander V6 auto, and have developed a knocking from the rear on the drivers side. Hubby has had a quick look and cant see anything obviously wrong. Any ideas please?? Thanks.

Can you describe the noise a little better?
When does it happen? ( what speeds, reverse?, when turning? etc.)

And are you positive it's coming from the rear of the vehicle?
Had a similar issue and drove around with 5 different mechanics 2 said it was coming from the rear axle, 2 said it was coming from the front and 1 in the middle!
