I have a CV joint ready to go out and need to replace. Has anybody done this without the tool to help separate the inner shaft from the gearbox? It looks like a two piece clamp that goes on the shaft which then can be used for leverage to pry out the inner shaft from the gear box. I'm thinking I can just pry against the shaft but am fearful of ruining the oil seal. Is there a good substitute? I'm thinking of putting a chain wrench around the shaft rather than the tool. Good/bad idea?
Any other tips before I begin?
