Did that Lexus/Toyota suffer that damage to the rear bumper/trip on that obstacle?

Yep. It is presently only hanging on by a single screw. :biggrin:
(Side note - he was hoping it would come completely off so he could get a new aftermarket bumper.)

I was thinking the air bags could have gone off! I wonder if they disable in any offroad modes?

I believe airbags are disabled in 4-Lo on most vehicles.

This is not correct. Airbags require a signal from an accelerometer like sensor located in the front chassis members (very close to the bumper) of most cars to activate. When that sensor moves violently (within a specified parameter), the sensor sends a signal directly to the airbag to deploy it. Airbags are even still able to fire up to 20 to 30 mins after the vehicle has been shut off.
