Just out of curiosity - what were your compression numbers (I know they are not going to be that accurate with the hold down method but it may tell us something)?

what kind of fuel pressure at the rail are you getting?

I would install cheap champions if it were me... clean the MAF, clean the intake

Sadly backfiring could be a worn out cam as well.

Hey Joey;

You would think his camshaft sensor would be squawking in this case (i.e., worn out lobes on camshaft) - wouldn't you?

Wolf, not always... if it is a worn cam it would just be indacated by his basic symptoms... running like crap and backfiring, but this isn't always a cam related indicator. It could be possible a bad coil pack, bad wires, clogged injectors.. many items.
