when I shift into Reverse (after driving in Drive) I get a thunk...
when I shift into reverse after just starting the car (not driving in Drive yet) - no thunk
when driving in drive and completely let off gas after accelerating (w/o hitting brake) I hear a delayed thunk (more subtle) but from same area...
when driving in drive, then stop, then shift to park, then shift to R - thunk

tranny preforms perfect otherwise, - I changed the tranny fluid last month and that didnt effect the 'thunk'
the thunk reminds me of what an late model american car would sounds like when shifting into reverse

could this be u-joints? - how could I check?

thanks

LR is more techinical, but the haynes will tell you what size tools you need IIRC.

I only have the RAVE CD.

As far as U-Joints any repair shop can change these... same on almost any vehicle.

(maybe dumb question) should I replace all the u-joints? how many?
any special tools needed? -I am fairly mechanically able so my brother and I will be doing the labor

anything else I should consider doing while under there?

thanks

I would change them all IIRC there are 4 of them.

Anything else, depends on the last time you changed your diff oil or the Transfer case oil. Getting near winter time, so if you decide to change either drive it for a few miles before you drain, so it will be warm.
